Every since the first solo given to her by the church music director, the purpose of Monica’s voice was apparent. Whether it was a song in an elementary school play or a smaller part in church ensemble, many say the gift of the anointing always found a way to shine through. It wasn’t until a duet performed with her dad (Mr. Guthrie) did she realize herself what God had planned for her and her instrument….and so, the journey began.
She continued to obey God’s call by continually involving herself in music and treated it as a ministry! She worked tirelessly to ensure that her time and talents were used as a vessel to encourage, inspire and heal. She lived her young adult life directing choirs, being involved in praise teams/congregational choirs (currently New Faith Baptist Church International)—and even tried her hand in various gospel play productions.
As with many, Monica took her ministry a step further by using the trials and tribulations of life to inspire her hand at song-writing—soon after giving birth to her freshman project “Willing Spirit.”
Later in her life, others saw what many saw at a very young age, affording her opportunities to sing with gospel greats like Kirk Franklin and Donald Lawrence—participating in collaborations and contributing to projects of Kim McFarland and Desmond Pringle, to name a few. Monica, not letting genre lines define her, soon found herself being asked to accompany R&B singers including Carl Thomas and Toni, Tony, Tone and Case.
